Background Information
The House of Atreus was created by King Tantalus of Lydia. Tantalus angered the gods by murdering his son Pelops and feeding him to the gods. After Tantalus was tortured by the gods for what he had done, they brought Pelops back to life. Later in his life he challenged King Oenomaus to a chariot race. He was given incredibly quick and agile horses from Poseidon. When Pelops won the race, he murdered King Oenomaus and married his daughter. As the King was dying he put a curse on both Pelops and all of Pelops’ descendants. When Atreus and Thyestes were framed for the murder of their brother Chrysippus, they were forced to flee to Mycenae. When Atreus later acquired the Golden Fleece he was crowned king. Later, Thyestes made love to Atreus’ wife whom gave him the Golden Fleece. This would make him king, and so Thyestes said that if the sun were to move backwards, he would allow his brother to gain the throne again. Zeus then moved the sun across the sky backwards, all of which was currently undiscovered by Atreus. When Atreus was made known of his brothers’ deceiving actions he slaughtered Thyestes’ children and served them to Thyestes. Thyestes then laid a curse on Atreus and his sons. Throughout the family of Tantalus, tragedies occurred and curses were made, all of which would come back to haunt the House of Atreus.
